Annual event Honor Members of Linden Department of Public Works for their works throughout the years.

BAY CITY, SL (20th January, 2026) - As in years past, Bay City will once again come together to honor the Moles of the Linden Department of Public Works with a party at the Bay City Fairgrounds.

Initially held in 2010 by the residents of Bay City, Mole Day serves as an occasion to show appreciation for the Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the broader Second Life® Grid. Residents from all Second Life communities are welcome to attend and share in appreciation for the LDPW’s moles.

Mole Day event will begin with a DJed set by GoSpeed of KONA Stream at 11:00 a.m. SLT. This will be followed by a performance by Agatha Nowles at noon.

“Moles” are members of The Linden Department of Public Works (LDPW). The LDPW is a program dedicated to enhancing the quality of life experienced by residents and visitors on the Linden Mainland. The LDPW comprises a team of Resident builders, scriptwriters, and other professionals who collaborate to create new content on behalf of Linden Lab and the benefit of all users. Notably, all members of the LDPW have Second Life accounts with the surname “Mole.”

The Moles are responsible for constructing the infrastructure of Second Life, including public roads and railways, coastal waterways and protected lands, and larger-scale projects such as the Linden Homes regions, premium content, and experiences.

Bay City is a mainland community, developed by Linden Lab® and home to the Bay City Alliance. The Bay City Alliance was founded in 2008 to promote the Bay City regions of Second Life and provide a venue for Bay City Residents and other interested parties to socialize and network. It is now the largest group for Residents of Bay City.

BAY CITY, SL (26th January, 2025) -  Bay City will once again convene to honor the Moles of the Linden Department of Public Works with a celebratory event held at the Bay City Fairgrounds.

Initially recognized in 2010 by the residents of Bay City, Mole Day serves as an occasion to express gratitude for the Moles and their invaluable contributions to Bay City and the broader Second Life® Grid. Residents from all Second Life communities are cordially invited to attend and share their appreciation for the LDPW’s remarkable moles.

Bay City Residents hold annual celebration of Linden Department of Public Works

BAY CITY, SL (21st January, 2024) - Bay City will once again hold its annual “Mole Day” event to salute the The Linden Department of Public Works' Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the rest of the Second Life® Grid.

Traditionally, the Mole Day event is held on or around Groundhog Day: for 2024, it will be held on Sunday, the 4th of February, beginning at 11:00 a.m. SLT. This year’s event will feature DJ GoSpeed of KONA stream followed by a live performance by Evee Blackstar (user name Harleen Jester) at 12:00 p.m. SLT.

The event will be held in the Bay City Fairgrounds in the North Channel region in Bay City. As in past years, Residents of all Second Life communities are encouraged to attend to share their appreciation of the LDPW’s many Moles. Of course, Moles and Lindens are also welcome to join in the festivities.

Now in its 12th year, Bay City’s annual “Mole Day” event will once be held this February as a way to salute the Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the rest of the Second Life® Grid.

Traditionally, the Mole Day event is held on or around Groundhog Day: this year, it will be held on Sunday, the 6th of February, beginning at 11:00 a.m. SLT. This year’s event will feature DJ GoSpeed of KONA stream followed by a live performance by Ve Joyy at 12:00 p.m. SLT.

The event will be held in the Bay City Fairgrounds in North Channel. The event is open to all Second Life® members who enjoy the great works of the Mole, whether they hail from Bay City, Nautilus City, Bellisseria, or anywhere else in Second Life. Of course, Moles and Lindens are also welcome to join in the festivities.

Mole Day Was A Success

The worm farms were working at high capacity. Cotton fields in the continent Satori were harvested. The cotton swab factory started spinning. The worms were canned in the most worm friendly way. Snax were made from locusts and crickets, dried and finely salted.

Somebody forgot to make a mole sign this year.

The Bay City Fairgrounds were prepared. Banners were hung, flowers planted, an impressive list of mole builds were set on display.

The pre-announcement for Mole Day was made (with the wrong time) and then came the pressrelease with an amazing poster.

Garden Mole

When the fairgrounds were opened all was ready to welcome the moles from all over the grid.

And they came!

Abnor Mole

Sergal, Chronos, Garden, Adora, Abnor, Dyna, Lulabelle, Notta, Alotta, Moonstruck Mole all dived into the yummy gifts we had on offer. Next to these moles 'certain' residents without a mole name dived in as well.

Most popular snax for the moles were the crickets. [this reporter would like to note that seeing a mole snack a worm from a can is quite a disgusting sight]

Adora Mole

Under the watchful eye of the Bay City Police Department the party started. Our own Miss Bay City, GoSpeed Rasere, kicked off the party with amazing music.

Soon the moles, 'certain' residents and visitors mingled and started dancing.

Chronos Mole

Bay City Brew flowed, the party became louder and louder. The conga line filled up quickly. The region was showing cracks with all these visitors, but it didn't break.

Segal Mole

Exhausted GoSpeed stopped her performance and was guided from stage to be replaced with the live music of Wolfie Starfire.

Sometimes a mole left the party mumbling the words 'Bellisseria' and 'work'. You can blame Bay City Brew if mistakes were made in Bellisseria that day.

GoSpeed Rasere

Through the singing and shouting I am sure I could heard a mole say 'I'll be back in Bay City soon to do some work!' but I am not sure.

Wolfie Starfire

By accident somebody said something about fireworks. Next explosions went off all over the place. Fires started. Lucky the visitors expected this to happen and kept on dancing and singing while the Bay City Fire Department cleaned up the mess.

The party lasted into the wee little hours of the day.

A great success!

Mole Day was initially honored in 2010 by Residents of Bay City, but happily welcomes all who appreciate the work the Moles have done to make the Second Life™ Grid better.

The LDPW (Linden Department of Public Works) started working in 2007 to create something amazing, Bay City.

Bay City opened the bridge in May 2008.

The LDPW is made up of residents, like you and me, that are hired by Linden Lab, to create objects and infra-structure for us all to see and use.

Before a resident can start working for Linden Lab they are required to visit the laboratory in Moloch and as by magic they suddenly turn into moles in various shapes and forms. They also have a sudden urge to steal cotton swabs.

Lately the LDPW has increased in size. Many new moles have been at work to create Bellisseria, an epic task. So much so that some residents of our Fine City think they have been forgotten by the adorable little rodents. Of course not! Who would forget visiting the laboratory? (though they do have little mole brains)

Mole Day is organized each year since 2010 by the residents of Bay City for All Moles of All Continents to thank them for all the work they do and have done to make this world more enjoyable.

So a special invitation goes out to all the moles!

We have special Mole Snax for you!

Of course, residents from all continents are welcome too to thank the critters.

Bring Mole Snax! (they like worms, dead bugs and cotton swabs)

WELCOME to the seventy-ninth issue of the Bay City Post

Mole appreciation day

On August the 31st the Bellisseria community organised their first Mole Appreciation Day (aka First Annual Mole Day Party) to thank them for the work they have done so far for Bellisseria and it's growing community.

More then 70 people showed up including at least 7 moles, breaking the sim.

This means that the moles now have two events every year to go to, and get worms. Bay City celebrates Mole Day each year in the beginning of February.

The more mole days the better! Our critters deserve plenty of worms!

Editorial-

From the standpoint of Bay City it might appear that Bellisseria is stealing the best of Bay City. For parts that is true, but is it bad?

Bay City has grown a community from the day it was created. We share experiences that are hard to compare with other communities. The Bay City Alliance is the leading force behind our initiatives, including this newspaper.

Bellisseria is new and fresh. The community is fragmented into 20 groups with 20 different websites. It will take some time before things settle down and Bellisseria has a sustainable community. 

It is good that Bellisseria grows it's own community. I feel it can "borrow" as much from Bay City as they want to grow that community. Next to that, Bay City can not block initiatives from the community of Bellisseria.

One of the cornerstones of the Bay City community is it's relentless effort to support "good causes" most notably Child's Play. None of the actions of the Bay City Community has a commercial intent. I expect the same from Bellisseria.

There is much that differs between Bay City and Bellisseria. There much that unites us. When Bay City can help, Bay City will help.

Topaz Oasis

The furry community at Topaz Oasis has sealed a cultural exchange treaty with Bay City. Part of this treaty is the placement of the Bay City Post newspaper vendor as a gesture of good will. Bay City kindly supports this initiative and provides the newspaper completely for free!

Topaz Oasis is home to the United Furry Outpost (UFO) and AGRA racing.

Hot Bay City Nights

The sad news is Hot Bay City Nights didn't make it this year. 

In previous years it ran a whole week and required a lot of volunteers. This year, despite best efforts (begging and offering slow cooked sweet marinated noobs), not enough volunteers were available.

Also there was that thing called RL, heavy overrated but a force to be reckoned with.

Please keep your agenda free for 2020!

The Experience Teleporter

We wrote about this a month ago. Please read it again as it is so fun to use! I am using it in trap-doors, ladders and the entrance into the castle made with a mega prim. Getting the key to work is a bit fiddly, specially on a different parcel. Try and try again and it will work.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is supported and organised by the Bay City Brewery. Keep an eye out on the events in Bay City to find out when and where you can get your beer and do the polka. You can expect it at the end of September.

On Saturday, the 4th of February, Bay City once again came together to celebrate the hardy Moles of the Linden Department of Public Works. The event was held in the Bay City Fairgrounds in North Channel. This was the 7th such event, set aside to show appreciation for The Moles and their many contributions to Bay City and the rest of the Second Life™ Grid. Normally held on the same day as Groundhog Day, this year's event was observed two days later, taking advantage of the weekend. The event featured a performance by DJ GoSpeed of KONA Stream, followed by a live performance by Oblee (Obleoinkment Wrigglesworth).

Love is in the air

It's that time of year. New couples are formed, and love blossoms in Second Life. It feels like so many of my friends and acquaintances in Bay City and beyond are kindling new romances. It's great to see.

Love is, of course, hard to explain. It is such a special thing to share, so magical, but so hard to pin down. Some might just call it some sort of biochemical response, but to me it seems so much more.

To those in love, to those with love this February, I salute you and wish you well: be joyful and be happy!

Mole Day celebrations reach new high

This year's "Mole Day" event, an annual observance that celebrates the good works of the Linden Department of Public Works and their Resident contractors, known as "Moles," was a rousing success this year. The region hit a peak of 49 agents present, with the Bay City Fairgrounds remaining at capacity for much of the event.

In attendance with a "who's who" of well-known Bay City and Second Life residents were several Moles, including Abnor, Ancient, Bat, Dyna, Frost, Garden, Naughty, Railway, Squishy, and Sylvan Mole, as well as Linden Lab staff members (and LDPW Lindens) Dee, Kona, Michael, and Shaman Linden.

A set, including "I am a mole and I live in a hole" and "Pure Imagination" from the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie, was DJed by our very own GoSpeed Racer of KONA Stream. She was followed by Marky Helstein, who played guitar and sang a fine set of rock 'n' roll tunes -- including a reworking of "Wonderwall," re-casting it as "wonder mole"

All had a great time, even when a herd of Starax Wand buffalo stampeded across the dance floor. 

We're not sure if any Moles, let alone "Molesworth Michael," saw their shadows -- but we do look forward to many more great things from the Linden Department of Public Works!

So I've recently started to work in mesh.

I would like to claim it was totally a new years resolution -- as I alluded to last month -- because then I could claim I really beat one. But that is not entirely true. Truth is, I've wanted to finally get going good on mesh for a while, and have had more than a couple false starts. Still, New Years really was when I said "okay, let's do this thing already."

I wish I could also give "my secret" for finally starting to product stuff in Blender, but truth be told there wasn't one. It was just, after months of tinkering around with basic shapes, starting to grasp how to manipulate them, and then beginning to "get" the wild and untamed territory that is upwrapping and ordering UVs, I realized that I had all the basics in mind for a very simple mesh model.

So I made a magazine. 

It's not that big a deal when you get right down to it. It's a box, with a couple extrusions and some edits here and there for scaling and rotation. It's not even all that smoothed. Nevertheless, it exists and looks like, well, a mesh magazine.

From this, I went onto a sparkler shape. Then I went onto a compass. I did a redo of my vuvuzuelas and hula-hoops. A microphone, and most recently, a foam bat - oh, and the odd sign or frame. Still wrapping my head around a few other items too, but the learning curve is getting a bit steeper again as I try to work out more complex models.

Actually accomplishing some of this, though, has reminded me of those earlier Second Life days, when I first textured a box prim to make a beach blanket, and then linked a simple pose ball to it, allowing my avatar to sunbathe on the family beach. If also reminded me of all those TUi building classes where I learned how to manipulate prims into any number of relatively basic shapes. 

More than this, it reminded me of some of the joy of building; of spending some time at the computer working out how to create a passable, presentable... tangible thing.  Something I definitely missed in Second Life.
