Warning: Canal Walls Could Collapse

 

Authorities of our Fine City are warning that canal walls are loose and could collapse.

It has been observed that Laetizia Coronet was present at all the walls that were crumbling. It has been suggested she is responsible for the poor state the walls are in.

Also, she is an active member of a militia and has been arrested before.

If you encounter her, please inform the authorities and pretend all is ok.

April the first is supposed to be a fun day filled with jokes and pranks. Not in Bay City! Our culture gives a complete different meaning to April the first.

Eversday! and Eversnight!

Events in our Fine City start at the Bay City Fairgrounds. This is NOT an official event! Gatherings of people will be near Dennis!

BCFD

Chances are people will run with scissors, dress up as sharks and throw exploding chickens. Worse, When they can they (named Everfools) will set fire to almost everything! They are dangerous!

Despite relentless efforts our Fine City has not been able to halt the Everfools and each year they come back. When they started, the Everfools were anonymous locals. These days the Everfools come from everywhere around the grid! (some hint that Linden Lab supports them)

Please avoid the Everfools and do NOT follow their lead. Report them to the BCPD and report the fires at the BCFD. Do NOT take images of fires and Everfools!

Not that it'll help but ya never know.

The party will include an expanded, two-hour set of DJed tunes presented by Marianne McCann, as well as fireworks and other festive fun. Food, drink, and other party favours will be provided for all attendees.

The event is an outdoor, high-class, wintertime soirée, and black tie attire and/or full dress is requested. All Second Life® Residents are welcome to attend and ring in the New Year with the Bay City community.

This will also be the last event within Bay City this year for donating to Child's Play Charity (www.childsplaycharity.org). Child's Play is a 501c3 non profit organization offers online communities such as ours an opportunity to help seriously ill children around the globe during their hospital stays with the purchase of games and gaming equipment.

As of today, Bay City has raised L$451,938 this season for Child’s Play, and hopes to complete the season at or beyond L$500,000.

Mainland community turns thirteen this May

BAY CITY, SL (6 May, 2021) - It was thirteen years ago that the first project of the Linden Department of Public Works was opened on Second Life®. To celebrate, Bay City's Residents are once again hosting their annual parade down the city's Route 66, followed by a live music event in the Bay City Fairgrounds.

Bay City opened in May of 2008 to initial viewing, with auctions for land in the city beginning soon after. It has developed into the largest community-focused virtual urban area in Second Life.

Participants in the annual parade are asked to gather at noon SLT/PDT on Sunday, the 16th of May, to lineup at the band shell in Bay City - Harwich. The parade will wend its way down Route 66 beginning at 12:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, and will conclude at the Bay City Fairgrounds in the North Channel region.

A live concert will kick off at 1:30 p.m. SLT/PDT at the Fairgrounds with DJ GoSpeed Rasere of KONA Stream providing music leading into the event until 1:30 p.m.SLT/PDT , followed by Mimi Carpenter from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, Parker Static from 2:30-3:30 p.m. SLT/PDT, and Noma Falta from 3:30-4:30 p.m. SLT/PDT.

All Residents of the Second Life grid are welcomed to participate. Celebration goods, including parade float bases and ideas, are available at the Bay City Community Center, in the Daley Bay region for those who wish to be a part of the parade. Ample viewing areas are provided. The music event is also open to all who desire to attend -- not only Residents of Bay City

Linden Research, Inc. to Be Acquired

Blatantly stealing the headline from the Linden Lab website.

Short version. The parent of Second Life and Tilia, Linden Research Inc., will be bought by two investors, Randy Waterfield and Brad Oberwager.

Please read the original publication and let it sink in.

Reading Inara's blog it looks like these two are Good (tm) people.

So, what will they do?

First lets see what it will mean to us, the residents of Second Life?

Short and simple, nothing!

From here on remember, I have no documentation! I am 100% guessing!!

It's not like we see Mitch Kapor banging on doors all around Second Life so there is no reason to expect any different from Randy and Brad.

Linden Research Inc. is the investment vehicle for Linden Lab. That is why most of us have never heard of it. When Philip Rosedale wanted to start Second Life he walked door to door to find investors. He found a few and with that capital he could buy stuffs and rent a poor peoples apartment on Linden Street, San Francisco.

Of the original investors, I think there were five, Mitch Kapor is the one best known. (There was a Judy?) Philip had some cash with him coming from RealNetworks. The capital was combined and legal things were documented.

It's a private company. The capital was divided into owner shares and based on that the investors would receive a percentage of the profit. The shares can not be freely traded, if an investor wanted to un-invest the only way to do that is to sell the shares back to Linden Research Inc.

When profits began to flow in and the break even point was passed the employees received, besides pay, shares in the company. These shares are more limited as the investment shares. They pay out, but don't give any voting rights.

Linden Research Inc. (the money) appoints the Board of Directors of Linden Lab. These define the strategy, check accounting and appoint the CEO.

The value of the company roughly can be divided,

5% Offices

10% Hardware

15% IP rights (protected software)

70% Clients and goodwill

Add to that the value of the potential of Tilia.

Who owns the stock

80% original investors

20% (former) employees

How well is Second Life doing? There are two answers to that.

1/ The investors are making profit, they have received more as their original investment.

2/ Second Life is no longer the money maker as it used to be. Income has dropped significantly but is stable the last few years. It is making good profits.

So why then sell off to two investors?

The answer could be as simple as. A few of the original investors want their stock converted to money.

Problem is, the (book) value of Linden Research is so high that the other investors can't match that and can't (or don't want to) increase their investment. Getting a normal loan from a bank would not be a good idea.

Another, more exciting, answer could be. There are plans to do something that costs a lot of money. For instance, set up an owned cloud.

There is a risk that Randy and Brad will be doing the hedge fund thing. However, when you look at the (assumed) distribution of value, there isn't much that can be sold off and rented back (since that is what the hedge funds do, and then let it die).

Sure it's possible to sell up the competencies (IP) of running Second Life and Tilia. But that would create competition reducing the value.

Sell off Second Life as a whole would be possible. But that would scare away clients and goodwill. Nobody wants an ad during log-in or while exploring the world. Nobody wants their userdata to be exploited by some sugar mountain.

Sell off the servers, well, that will happen when our bunny knows how to tweak things and puts us all in the cloud. The servers could be rented out to Amazon and become part of the AWS cloud, or be sold to them. It's just a bunch of machines with cables around them.

What will be sold to Randy and Brad? Not sure. I find it hard to believe that all original investors will hand over their stock. Philip selling off his stake in his brainchild? No way. Can they get their hands on the stock owned by (ex) employees? Unlikely.

I have to assume that Randy and Brad will get a majority stake in Linden Research because of the word acquired and the regulatory things. They will not get complete ownership, as is reflected by the board of directors that doesn't change except that Randy and Brad will be part of it. If they had full ownership they could/ should push them out.

They key words in the publication are "to help Linden Lab achieve new heights in distribution, scale, and quality while remaining true to the original vision, creativity, and community that makes Second Life unique and special" also "continue growth and expansion".

I am sure things will change. I find it unlikely that those changes would hurt the community. It could be possible that a localized Second Life could spring up, only for one language/country on a localized, faster, cloud. Would create competition and would break up the communities but it could be a specialized world, for education, museum or training ground separate from Second Life but controlled by Linden Lab, from a distance.

From my point of view, no time to call it quits. I'm not selling of my lands.

Randy and Brad will get an account. Be Lindens, and we, as a community, will make sure they will only do good for us. We are the value of Second Life, that won't change.

Message From Uccie

Friends and Family in Second Life,

An October weekend filled with Guinness and Jameson's led to my birth in Galway, Ireland nine months later on June 16, 1988, or so I'm told. My father was on assignment there for the US Navy when he met (and presumably, had s*x with) my birth mother. As things go, he didn't know that until she travelled to America to present him with me and an ultimatum: Take the girl child as a baby cramped her style. His wife was less than thrilled, but the literal red-headed step-child was brought into the home.

Most people, including me, did not know I wasn't her child as we both had carrot-red hair, freckles, and a fierce attitude. When my father died I was nearly 10 years old and she told me of my bastardy and her youngest son that I was his to raise. Spoiler alert: We later reconciled and I was her care giver for the last 12 years of her life. But not being able to see that future led me to do stupid things and also to the first time I died.

Some of you know the long story, but what's important is that this brother saved my life, though at the cost of me being able to speak and an inability to cope with a number of instantly blooming phobias. He damaged his teaching career by moving up in grade each year so I was always in his classroom at least once a day to be my safety net. He was my knight in shining armour, keeping me safe and loved.

In my Senior year, my shrink introduced me to Second Life. My fear of people, especially men, and a fear of leaving the house needed to be fixed. She felt that I could socialize virtually, picking up some personal and life skills. The Teen Grid also let me work out .... let's just say there's a reason I fled on my 18th birthday and started a fresh account on the Main Grid. CC Columbo, my Real Life brother who raised me and joined SL the month before, met me at Waterhead and took me to his land in Nangrim. There he gave me $L100, 16 square meters of land to call my own, and then took me to the Isle of Lesbos. The rest, as the trite say, is history.

At Lesbos I met my soon-to-be sister, Threshin. She helped me become a strong (if wilful) and confident woman over the subsequent years. Always encouraging and loving, I learned that I didn't need to cling to my brother. I also met my wife, Angela, there. Marriages in SL are real, if you let them be so.

I'm also proud to say I was a citizen of Bay City, the BEST community in Second Life. So many close friends, especially Marianne, Pygar, Rachel, Roc, and the eternal Ever Dreamscape. This was truly the life I did not have growing up. And grow up I did. The strength I gained from being accepted into the city and becoming a contributor (the year I was Miss Bay City was the best year in any of my lives) led to me becoming a productive citizen in Real Life. Getting a job, paying taxes, and becoming responsible for others. Just like a real person!

It wasn't easy, but learning from my Bay City friends and people like Kennylex, my darling sistress Zen, Crap, Anthony & Mo, Vick, KinZiki, Torley, Michael (King of the Moles!), Kaelin, Doc, Loki, all the Moles & Lindens, Claudia222, Cubey, Elvira, Draxtor, Gammy, Kaikou, Honour, Fenix, Shep, GoSpeed, Iris, Miss Jane, Shaman, Parker, Serenity, Owl, Nikokito, Sylvia, Washu, Mr & Mrs Hooker ... cripes, I wish I could remember everyone right now ... helped make me into the person I am now.

Then there was the addiction. A surgery that CC almost didn't survive made me snap. I had trouble separating Real Life from Second Life. I wanted to escape, not knowing I'd survive without him. All my passwords were changed. My blog, Flickr, and any ties I had to the virtual world ... a real world unto itself, mind you, had to be cut. Every non-essential app was taken off my phone and parental controls activated. Back on the heavy meds and into therapy again. But got strong again and found that there are many things one can do in Meatspace. I even got to be CC's boss at the (not so secret) government facility we work at!

Then there was the B-side. Most likely it was from someone at work that CC, his girlfriend, I picked up the COVID-19 virus (along with who knows how many others), learning of this only after we were told to stay home (with pay!) and to wash our hands. Fever, cough, no sense of taste or smell ... I was tested. A few days later I'm here in the hospital with an iPad and a teddy bear and I don't think this is going to be good.

If this doesn't get sent out, you will never know. If you are reading this, please help CC cope. He's had enough loss. His father (mine, too), his daughter, and his grandparents all died the same year I first died. He's had enough. We had a good 20 or so years after that, sure, but ...

/me hands you an impossibly large box.

Take my Love. I have plenty for all of you. Perhaps I'll see you all on the Big Grid and we can swap stories. I hear there's no Grid goo and the Feed there works. Until then, there's so much I haven't done. Go out and do it for me.

EversNight! Be Prepared!

We are heading toward the craziest day, and night, in our Fine City. Evers Night!

Last year, on April the first, large portions of or fine city ended up in ashes. Large fires were raging everywhere. The Bay City Police department and the Bay City Fire department were busy doing their best, supplying sufficient petrol to the ones in need.

The reason why things suddenly catch fire is still a mystery. It is suggested that the secret cult of Ever fools set things on fire.

This year it is expected that not only our Fine City will be caught in a tornado of fires but that also on several sub continents prims could be turned into ashes.

The Sansara Border Protection Unit has been seen setting up bubbly foam barriers to stop fires entering the ageing continent.

In anticipation the Mayori (tinm) has been seen escaping our Fine City leaving us helpless.

I'm away

If you happen to see the Ever fools, avoid any contact, stay indoors and barricade the doors. Keep a water-hose, or a fire-extinguisher, and a first-aid-kit ready.

Bolt down anything outside, benches, cat, dogs, cows, chickens, garden chairs and anything that can be moved or can take fire.

Please do not run with scissors, swim with sharks or drink Bay City Brew. Don't be an Ever fool.

MOLE DAY COMING TO BAY CITY THIS FEBRUARY

Annual Event Honors the objects of the Linden Department of Public Works

BAY CITY, SL (27th January, 2020) - Every year, Second Life Residents meet to salute Second Life's favorite mammal, the Moles of the Linden Department of Public Works, and celebrate well over a decade of amazing projects built by these hardy Resident contractors.

Mole Day was initially honored in 2010 by Residents of Bay City, but happily welcomes all who appreciate the work the Moles have done to make the Second Life™ Grid better.

Held on the same day as Groundhog Day, this year’s annual Mole Day will again take place at the Bay City Fairgrounds February 2nd commencing at 11:00 a.m. SLT. The event will feature DJ GoSpeed of KONA stream followed by Wolfie Starfire performing live at 12:00 p.m. SLT. 

"Moles" are members of The Linden Department of Public Works (LDPW). The LDPW is a program focused on improvements related to the experience of living on, or visiting the Linden Mainland. The LDPW organizes teams of Resident builders, artists, and scripters (the Moles!) to create new content on Linden Lab's behalf and to the benefit of all. These Residents have the last name “Mole.”

Moles essentially build all of the grid’s infrastructure: the public roads and railways, items in our coastal waterways and protected lands, and even larger scale projects like the Linden Homes regions, premium content and experiences, and much more.

Words From Emperor Michael I, Re: Xiola

It must have been ten, eleven years ago a city worker appeared at the sewer I was living it. Her name was Lexie and she gave me some food. We chatted a bit, not much but enough for me to like her. Ever so often she dropped by and left me some, sometimes we chatted, never much but always in a kind spirit.

One day my namesake, Michael (rodent city worker), followed her. He was less kind to me, wanted me out of the sewers and gone. Despite that he had some prims with him for me to use. A nice gesture from a city worker. I used the prims for another sewer where I felt I was being more secure.

One day Lexie took with her Xiola. Must have been 2011. Lexie didn't look good, she was not feeling well, I could see that. She told that Xiola was going to assist her with her responsibilities around the city.

Shortly after that Lexie disappeared, or to be more accurate, Lexie never showed up any more.

Xiola visited my new and better hidden sewer and I asked where Lexie was. Xiola didn't reply, she smiled, gave me some food and left again.

I try not to become too attached, too close and too friendly with city workers (Lindens). They can come and go without any warning. It's part of their work to do city work. I am sure they enjoy their work, they even come and visit outside working hours.

Xiola visited less often as Lexie did. I'm ok with that because I could see the things she did. She changed things, enabling people to connect in various ways. Bringing a smile to people. She could sense what was going on and took responsibility to change things, things we will never know the scope of. 

She'll be the first to correct me and tell it's a team effort.

One day while she was visiting she jokingly told me I could become Emperor if I wanted it hard enough. We had a good laugh about that joke.

She trusted me enough to tell me she had seen me before she became a city worker. She moved here around 2006 to become a city worker in 2011.

Recently Strawberry became a city worker. No mystery about her life before she started this job. We never met. The sewer where I lived was very secret until the floods and now that I am Emperor I can use the provided shelters I have requested to be build by the citizens of My Empire. Strawberry never found me. I should reach out to her one day.

Today I learned Xiola will stop her work as city worker. Perhaps she will remain here in her secret 2006 identity. I don't know. What I do know I am now able to formally say goodbye. Something that I could not do when Lexie left.

Tree Lighting Roundup And Seasons Wishes

After the announcement of the tree lighting event we offered a preview to the auction. This report to show you results and some cool pictures.

But first this,

Just before the party started the auction vendors opened and the first bids went in.

A pre-party started with the KONA stream, people flocked in while GoSpeed made sure the KONA stream could handle it all.

Then, when about 30 people had arrived, GoSpeed took the stage and whipped up some amazing tunes. The conga line was filled quickly.

The auction biddings continued. The first auction wars flamed up.

Mimi Carpenter took the stage and gave us live music with the most adorable accent.

The fairgrounds filled to the max, people were stuck at the bridge. Around the conga were people dancing and drinking hot cocoa.

After Mimi came live music from Wolfie Starfire.

With Pygar arriving the auction wars went out of control, bids went in left and right. People were shouting, shaking their fists, banning each other. The auction vendors were heating up nearly melting the ice-ring around the tree.

Half way of the performance of Wolfie things went silent. Everybody looked at the tree, the countdown started. 

Five !
Four !
Three !
Two !

ONE !!..........

Then at exactly 3:30 the lights in the tree were lit. Fireworks started.

Wolfie continued her performance, some started using the ice-ring and started skating.

The auction entered it's final phase. 

The last knock-out bids were placed, some bidders collapsed on the floor and needed emergency treatment.

The auction brought in an astounding L$139,225! What's more, we have currently raised L$31509 in the donation bins, bringing our one day total to L$170,734! Wowza!

Our previous record today was 2017, where we raised L$185,406 for the entire season. At this rate, we are on track to smash that record!
