Mind Your Business! with Sylvia Tamalyn

With Sylvia Tamalyn

September 2013

This month's visit isn't to a brand new business in Bay City, but since Faye Blackheart likes to change up the VDR building on a regular basis so it certainly *looks* new every time I go by, I decided that's close enough because I wanted to go see the latest version. Virtual Dispute Resolution (VDR) is "a mediation and arbitration firm providing pro bono alternative dispute resolution options to those dealing with intellectual property disputes in virtual world and digital publishing settings." The Bay City office is located in Handa, on a corner near the hot air balloon stop.

The front entrance of the building has a very smooth automatic door that I had to "test" a few times, and there's a group joiner sign for VDR nearby.. The building is made by TeddyJr, and I had to get my shopping list out and make a note to check this guy's stuff out because this is an interesting structure. Inside, the first floor is set up like a mini-courtroom, including benches for the peanut gallery and a podium for speakers to address the mediator. Always paying attention to detail, Faye has placed a gavel on the mediator's desk and there's also a framed law degree on a shelf. Upstairs is a lounge area and a long table with benches, set as a sort of library/study area, where you can relax and read about DMCA, LL's policy re: DMCA, and the U.S. Constitution. There's also a link for the SL Bar Association, if you're feeling litigious. The 3rd floor appears to be where Faye is planning her world takeover, as it's filled with computer servers. There's also another lounge area and two work cubicles that are scarily authentic. I had to laugh in appreciation at the carpet in this area, I think I've seen it in every RL cube farm that I've been in.

There is more to this building, though (this place is fun to explore!). There's another door to the east of the main entrance, and it leads to a hole in the wall restaurant complete with a small bar and piano (and pizza!). On the back side of the building is another door leading to stairs that wind up through an apartment area and on to the roof, where you can gaze across the South Channel and check out what Nova Albion is up to.

Finally (whew, Faye has a lot going on there!), also behind the building is the "Bay City Public Pool", with a fuel pump and parking spaces. I spent some time floating on the pool mattress (it has lots of poses), then remembered that I was supposed to be writing an article, so it was time to leave...but I will be back, to see what Faye does here next. Check it out next time you're in Handa!

August 2013

This month's "new business" visit was to Primtastic Creations in Mashpee, the new(ish) store opened by ADudeNamedAnthony. I'd been here once before for a Taste of Bay City party but never ventured off of the roof, so it was time for a closer look.

Anthony has built a five-story building to showcase his work, and I have to say that even if the building was empty, the excellent cage elevator he built inside is worth a trip. It's great fun, and very much like riding a RL elevator...the little number buttons even light up! We won't talk about the part where I was nearly crushed to death trying to figure out how it works (tip: don't stand on the platform while the elevator is coming down from above your head).

After playing with it a bit, I figured I should check out the actual goods being sold. First floor is where Anthony has parked a few of his great vehicles and boats, along with a LM giver for 2Zoetic, so you can go to his main store to see the entire car collection. Second floor is various buildings like a warehouse and an auto shop , and...what's this? Third floor are the elusive appliances I've pestered him about for months! Yes, I did indeed snatch up an adorable electric can opener, and I figure Ever will pay for it since I'm on the job and all. Right?

The fourth floor is where you will find more utilitarian goods like traffic lights and power poles, and the fifth floor is actually the roof, which is also worth checking out for the lovely view of Bay City (and the opportunity to throw spitballs at Marianne's place, The Pen). I failed in an attempt to jump over to the roof of Molly's building next door, but was saved from a five-story trip headfirst to the ground by an invisible something, so all was well. I dusted myself and my new can opener off, and was on my way. Thanks for playin', Anthony! :p

(UPDATE: At the time this article was written, the store was open. Unfortunately, Anthony has since temporarily closed the store due to RL concerns, but told me that he will reopen at a later date when things settle down. The building is still in place and he is still a Bay Citizen! And the cage elevator is still there so check it out!)

July 2013

This month I poked around at Anchor Skybox, located in Handa where the Anchor Motel used to be. It's a nice location to live at, right next to the Bay City Port Authority Seaplane Harbor, which isn't all that important if you are living up in the sky, but nice to have good scenery down below if you happen to fall out. (Not that I do that sort of thing, of course. *cough*) Next door is the Anchor Blues Club, a cool-looking place to visit for a bit of ground-level fun . There is the convenience of the New Port Yacht Club rez zone right there as well, so you can launch a boat or head over to the road at the west end of the rez zone if wheels are more your thing (there is also a bike rezzer in front of the skybox rental office if you don't have wheels of your own!). Anyway, skyboxes rent for L$150 per week, and come in furnished and unfurnished versions.

Well, you know I love to snoop in houses, so I had to TP up to one of the unoccupied skyboxes to check it out. Made by Fanatik, it's a lovely modern cabin design with one full glass wall. The lower floor has a furnace, sofa, desk, chair, bench, ottoman and rug, all from great stores like Scarlet Creative, The Loft, and Cheeky Pea. Stairs lead up to the loft area, which has a bed, chair, rug, and lamp. The colors in this cabin are rich and bright tones, and the feel is a bit funky and inviting. The skybox is on a tiny floating island and the rental box is conveniently tucked into a corner of the outside "yard" area. Outside the glass wall next to the front door is a cute bench for stargazing.

Overall, these skyboxes are very cute, really nice quality (the skybox itself is my favorite part), and renting for a reasonable price. If you want a place in Bay City but like privacy, check these skyboxes out. At the time of my visit, there were two out of the six skyboxes available for rent. To visit, go to the office and look at the photos on the left wall. Click on any of the ones with a green lighted number on the photo to get a landmark, then up you go!

June 2013

(Hiya! So last month Ever placed a "help wanted" ad in the Post, looking for a reporter to keep up on new business activity in Bay City. I couldn't resist the carrot of "nonexistent" pay and "strange bennies", so here I am! As I come across new businesses in our city, I'll pick one to chat about here. Please send me info about any new biz places so I can go snoop....umm....investigate and report! Otherwise I'll have to write about my own places and that's just tacky.)

This month I popped by Kinnaird's Bay City Fire Department Station #2 in Dennis. I dunno where Station #1 is, I assume decimated by Ever at some point, but hey, this new one is fab! Kinn put in a gorgeous (and theme appropriate!) Organica build on the former site of the now-relocated "Stinky" Pink Motel, and filled it with all kinds of excellent details. (As a side note, I'd like to offer personal thanks to her for building this right by my poor, plague-ridden, Y-Stay. Keep those hoses pointed toward the Y, OK?)

Located on a corner, the station is right next to Molexandria, which at some point is to become a public swimming pool. Extra water is always handy, especially when dealing with fires in Dennis, right? As you enter the building, you'll see a gorgeous shiny red fire truck created by Bay City Rumble's bossman/overlord, Anthony. I haven't convinced Kinn to take me on a joyride in it yet, but I'll keep nagging because this truck is sweeeet. Wandering on past it, you'll see a cool dispatch area set up at the back of the ground floor. Then there are spiral staircases, and do not even get me started about how hard those are to walk up, but you can slide down the pole so it's worth the effort! Also worth the effort are the upstairs areas, which include bunks and lockers on the 2nd floor, and the kitchen and lounge on the 3rd floor.

So check it out, this place is awesome! The only thing missing is cute firefighters! (Hellooooo, Bay City RP Group!)

Bay City School of Driving

Yes its true Bay City has a School of Driving?!?
While we don’t know who runs it, when classes are held, or how you can become certified (?) We would like to show you how virtually safe it is bwuahahahahaha who are we kidding ;P
Thanks Ivan Suen for taking these great shots and sharing his thoughts!!!

?!

"A pedestrian on a Bay City sidewalk was nearly run over today when a taxi cab was seen driving erratically down Route 66 before losing control and crashing into the Bay City School of Driving. Although the owners of the new driving school continue to have no comment on recent speculation that they are somehow behind the "dissapearance" of yellow taxi cars from a local company near the courthouse, the pedestrian that took this photo noticed that after the crash, a young driver got out of the car with what looked like a diploma in hand. Another, older person got out of the passenger side and snuck into the driving school. All of this further raises speculation..."

"Another odd photo
One of our astute citizens snapped this picture with their cell phone
while they were out jogging. "It still smelled like fresh spraypaint", he said.
Although the police are still investigating the taxi towing scandal
and the rumors about the driving school simply spraypainting
their logo on BCT cars is pure speculation at this point, this driving
school vehicle is the same make and model of the taxis that have been dissappearing."

"where'd all these taxis come from?
I think the DMV or driving school might be implicated in the recent dissapearances of taxis from the Bay City Taxi company. BCT recently noticed that their taxi cabs kept dissapearing when they were parked in the Black Bay area."

...

All roads lead to the asylum.

Play safe!!!

Mimes Run Amok in Known Mime Haven the Pen!

Yes it’s true there was a notable mime outbreak at the famed Pen in Mashpee. While it is common knowledge that the Pen has been a long time refuge for the notoriously wretched mime, it is a sad shame that this most recent outbreak happened upon Bay City’s “unofficial” Mayori: Marianne McCann’s eighth Rez Day. Mime Happens!

Fourth Annual Event Celebrates Holiday Season

The Bay City Annual Tree Lighting, concert and fundraiser was held Sunday, 8th December 2013 and featured GoSpeed Racer, Grace McDunnough, and Christov Kohnke. The event was held at the Bay City Fairgrounds, in North Channel.  There was ice-skating, dancing, refreshments and lots of fun! And hey! We only crashed the sim once \o/ …and had an almost immediate restart from the lab! Thanks Lab people!!!
The silent auction included items from Pygar Bu, Cory Edo of Trompe L'oeil, Loki Eliot, ADudeNamed Anthony of 2Zoetic Motors, Robin (Sojourner) Wood, Laetizia "Tish" Coronet, Marianne McCann, Pamela Galli of La Galleria, Zen Zarco of <:*BoOgErS*:>, Wildstar Beaumont, Zak from Bop!, Winter Ventura of Eclectic Randomness, Isley Oodles of Fraidy Cat Designs, Pallina60 Loon, Eden Malik, Ever Dreamscape, and Hendrix Portal, and others.

All proceeds from the silent auction and from donation bins at the venue (kiosks will remain up and ready for your donations until January  6th) will go to Child's Play Charity (www.childsplaycharity.org). Child's Play is a 501c3 non profit organization offers online communities such as ours an opportunity to help seriously ill children around the globe during their hospital stays with the purchase of games and gaming equipment. To date $85,501 has been raised. Yay \o/

A sincere thanks to those who offered items, those who donated, those who entertained and those who came to the sim filled gala! Also, a big thanks to our decorators: Marianne McCann, Pygar Bu and Mr. Windlight himself>>>  Michael Linden, and of course the wonderful folks of the Bay City Alliance!!! Thank you ALL for you kind generosity!!!

Prims Ahoy!

This year’s annual lighted boat parade was hosted by Fenix Eldritch on Thursday, December 12th at the Bay City Fairgrounds North Channel. DJ GoSpeed Racer rocked some wintry tunes for onlookers and a skate party after the parade. The boats were all “decked” out holiday style as they drifted (crashed and ghosted) around the sound! We did have a most excellent and expedient turn around on the sim and the party partied on!! Gotta love that second sim for back up. Thanks Guvnor!!!

** Thank you Marianne McCann and Pygar Bu for a most excellent build at the fairgrounds, and Michael Linden for making things all snowy and windlighty there!!!

OSPREY THERIN MEMORIALIZED, HONORED

Osprey Therian mounts rescue mission while many mourn her creator's passage.
The person behind the avatar Osprey Therian, Vivian Kendall, passed away on the 9th of December. While her involvement with Bay City itself was limited (she organized a Nova Albion to Bay City parade before the original auctions and was party to come Hallowe'en events between us, Nova Albion, and the suburbs), her influence on Residents across the grid, including many in our fair city, is far-reaching.
A memorial was held on the 14th of December on Osprey's land in Bodega. Several attended to listen to Justin Esparza and Enjah Mysterio speak about Vivian.
In attendance, as well as Mysterio and Esparza, were a large selection of prominent avatars, including many from Bay City:Tozh Taurog, Amulius Lioncourt, Fenix Eldritch, Robin Sojourner, Stroker Serpentine, SensualMami, Arrehn Oberlander, Lucy Tornado, Patch Lamington, Wildstar Beaumont, Marianne McCann, Ilianexsi Sojourner, Pixleen Mistral, Rhiannon Chatnoir, Bixyl Shuftan, Monty Talbot, Torley Olmstead, TheaDee, Kumi Kuhr, Mossant Paravane, Gentle Heron, Prokofy Neva, Vick Forcella, RacerXGullwing, Francesca Alva, Molly Montale, Gomi Mfume, Holocluck Henly, Frans Charming, Avi Arrow, NikoKito Aries, Kennylex Luckless, Laetizia Coronet, Otenth Paderborn, Zayn Till, and Watrbabee Greymoon.
The next day saw Osprey Therian lead a heroic mission to hopefully rescue Salazar Jack. Her and a small group of brave adventurers, including our own Felix Eldritch, went through the anomaly in Rodeo in earch of Jack. Unfortunately, members of this team have not made contact since crossing through the portal.
Both were wonderful send offs for a person who had a very big hand in the creative side of Second Life, and who inspired many. She will be missed.

MOLE WATCH
by Marianne McCann

With the holidays upon us, the moles are nestled safely in their warm burrows, and not much seen on our side of the grid.

They have done a bit more holiday decorating, though a plan to tint the effluent of the water treatment plant to green and red seems to have been nixed .

They did do a boat removal in New Port: one that was stuck there, in the air, due to a current "selected/sat upon" auto return bug.

According to head mole, Michael Linden, there are "a bunch" of Bay City-related fixes in the works, but other projects of higher priority are creeping ahead. This will include trolley fixes would could see the overhaul of the entire trolley line. This would be a welcome repair for those who rely on our beleaguered and aging trolley system for local travel.

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

January 2008 saw a high water mark, with SL hitting its highest concurrency. Over 88,200 were logged into Second Life at the same time. Plans then included increasing capacity for the 100,000 mark, expected by mid-year. 88,200 remains the high point to this day.
According to Linden Lab, Second Life Residents spent a total of 28,274,505 hours inworld in January of 2008. The average concurrency was 38,000 residents.  It is unclear how many of those Residents were 'bot accounts.

Bay City Welcomes Sailors!

This year’s annual lighted boat parade will be hosted by Fenix Eldritch and held on Thursday, December 12th from 7-9 PM SLT at the Bay City Fairgrounds North Channel. DJ GoSpeed Racer will be offering some wintry tunes for onlookers and a skate party after the parade. Come see the boats all “decked” out holiday style as they drift around the sound!

Got skates?! There are freebies at the fairgrounds so just bring a warm sweater and enjoy the wintry wonderland!

* Tip: if you don’t have a boat with lights or that mods, it’s fairly easy to create a string or two of lights that fit your boat and simply “attach to center” on your avi :D .

** Thank you Marianne McCann and Pygar Bu for a most excellent build at the fairgrounds, and Michael Linden for making things all snowy and windlighty there!!!

*** Side note: there is an ornament on the tree made by BlueGin Yifu, one by Osprey Therian (a long time Nova Albion person who is currently in hospice) and there are snowmen by Hyper Mole :-)

So sad I believe he was even mad!  Aww one supposes even griefers need love too. Let’s hope Santa brings him a nice legal script or too and he discovers the simple joy of snowball fights or the like. Think of all the fun I've missed;
Think of all the noobies that I haven't kissed;

Santa baby, I want a titan, and that's not a lot;
Been an angel nearly all of the year; oh dear
So hurry and IM me tonight

*[instrumental intermission]*

Santa honey, one thing that I really do need...
Fix the feed... it’s driving me to FB, Santa baby,
So hurry and IM me tonight

Santa cutie, let’s cut the lag and log on Newegg
Got the link here I’ll need your ID and password, Santa cutie,
So hurry and IM me tonight

Come and trim my Christmas tree with a 5sixteen Samsung SSD
I really do believe in you;
Let's see if you believe in me...

Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing... some bling...
And a couple of sims; Santa baby,
So hurry and IM me tonight

Oh So hurry and IM me tonight
Hurry, tonight!

A Mid-Autumn Afternoons Dream

Spring sprang, summer shined, winter welcomes, but I always fall for autumn.
“Color my city bright and pretty.
She frolics in the maze her eyes deft avert my gaze;
I her mentor and she my muse, delighting in the painted hues.
Come play with me under the big oak tree and happily we’ll set our fancy free!”

Seriously though isn’t autumn wonderful? Come visit Bay City!

December 8th Tree Lighting and Charity Ball

We are seeking the donation of auction items for the Bay City Alliance's annual Tree Lighting Festival and Charity Ball. We are again looking to raise funds at this event for www.childsplaycharity.org . This organization offers online communities such as ours, an opportunity to help seriously ill children around the globe during their hospital stays with the purchase of games and gaming equipment.

It would be so kind of you to offer a signature item for the silent auction. All proceeds will go directly to www.childsplaycharity.org and can be delivered to our dedicated alt baycitysl resident, and /or inquiries can be made to Marianne McCann co-founder of the Bay City Alliance or Ever Dreamscape, Editor, The Bay City Post. We would suggest that you send fun, interesting, unique, or merely extravagant transfer items (or a no copy object that the auction winner can give to you to redeem for their prize, if the item(s) have to be no transfer) that reflect well on your SL business, as it is also our goal to offer you a great opportunity to showcase yourself at this popular annual event.

The Tree Lighting Festival is to be held Sunday, December 8th 2013 from 1-4 PM SLT at the Bay City Fairgrounds. The event features the tree lighting and silent auction, as well as live and DJed music with GoSpeed Racer, CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster, and Grace McDunnough.
There will be ice skating, dancing, refreshments and lots of fun! All are welcome to this free public event and we would particularly like to invite you!!

Thank you for your kind consideration!

 Cordially,

The Bay City Alliance Event Team

*Please send your holiday ornament to be hung on the tree to Marianne McCann.
**Don’t forget the lighted boat parade to be held in the North Channel later that month.

Halloween Party!

Just as predicted (smart aren’t we?) Halloween came October 31st this year. The Bay City Alliance held an awesome dance party at the Hallowe'en Hay Maze at the Bay City Fairgrounds. The party featured Bay City favorite DJ GoSpeed Racer! Hardly any pumpkins were hurt in the making of this party.
Rumor had it that in addition to Marianne McCann and Pygar Bu; the Lindens helped to spook up the fairgrounds and city. Thanks to Michael Linden for some awesome lighting and the moles for their spookalicious creations \o/

BAY CITY ALLIANCE

In October, The Bay city Alliance passed its fifth anniversary as a group! The first meeting was 10th October, 2008 Only four members who attended the first meeting (out of 25) are still active in BC. One of the first action items was a welcome basket. BlueGin Yifu, founder of the Bay City Alliance, passed in October 14th, 2010, roughly two years after founding the Bay City Alliance.  She helped spearhead the sense of community, and community participation throughout Bay City.  To this day we still use a stage design she created for our annual Anniversary event.

New Olde Bay City Brewery Back!!

Yes the Bay City Brewery has been reassembled and is back in its former location in Argos, on Route 66, and across from the Bay City Department of Sanitation. Chief Brewmaster Ivan Suen has created some signature brews (and by signature we mean we’ll be needing your signature on a waiver before drinking any of the brew). The Brewpub is now open to the public, and is featuring live DJ’s on Most Saturday nights, some Fridays and occasionally after the Bay City Rumbles on Thursdays.

*Although some speculate the location adjacent to the Sanitation department is the cause of the signature green beers glow. We say… It’s Something in the Water!!!   ;/

What a Character!

With the advent of advent… wait what? That’s a different month?? Ok lessee. With Halloween just around the corner, the moles are again coming to town to enhance some of Bay City’s spookier prims for your pixel enjoyment.

Let’s help welcome people with some avatastic entertainment and visit these sites to greet our ghoulish guests.

Seriously I myself love to role play and/or do a little “performance art” at the South Channel Asylum, the Falmouth Hotel, and at the hay maze in the Bay City Fairgrounds. It’s fun to dress up and “play” the role of a lunatic, a ghosted bell hop, a wicked witch or giant spider and more. So how ‘bout we costume up and make these builds come alive as guests pour into the city?!

Come reap the freaky fun!
