Virtual reality has nothing to do with goggles, 3d, expensive computers and servers.

Virtual reality is a reality that isn't real, virtual.

Even though Second Life offers virtual reality, you dive into a world that isn't real but perceive it as real, it isn't the first. Nether are all other computer generated images and experiences.

Books offer virtual reality. Read a book and you are immersed into a reality that can be far away from the real thing. You can explore distant, never reached, planets. Sail with the pirates and find a treasure. All in virtual reality.

When I was young I listened to the stories that were real to me. Closed my eyes and could see little red riding hood and the BIG bad wolf or how snow white chewed on the apple, even though I tried to warn her. The stories continued in my sleep.

Before recorded history there were story-tellers. Often they would sing their phrases or rhyme so to remember them.

Virtual reality starts with them.
