Time To Apologise

Dear readers of this not-very-up-to-date newspaper.

I have to apologise.

The article about me being online was only half true (read it if you have no idea what this is about), you could have guessed that because of the poor humour and overdosage or irony.
The reason for that is simple. I was floating on a cloud of painkillers thinking I was strong and could take over the world.

I honestly expected to be in SL in two weeks time when I wrote that.

Reality had hit quite hard. It's now 7 months and I still am not able to go into SL without repercussions, I have tested it a few times.

My brain has had about six scans. The latest doesn't show any damage. All the ones before show a brain that has been smashed to one side. First one shows a gap about the size of a apple on one side, filled with blood or a liquid.
You can imagine a list of permanent consequences (personality change, memory loss, speaking with a Scottish accent etc). Strike it, from the way it looks there is no permanent brain damage. I sometimes forget things, no more as usual and I still can blame that on an incident in my childhood. Had some weird glitches in my vision but that was ages ago and can also be accredited to the painkillers.
So brain is ok.

I thought that a few ribs were broken. I was wrong. After writing the article I have had several scans. It wasn't a few, it was most on one side. The rest, left and right were all bruised. The side that was broken caused less pain as the side that was bruised.
Not only were ribs broken, my sternum, or chest bone, was broken at three places. next to pain it has caused a (now permanent) change in chest configuration. One side of the sternum is now up, and the other, lower,  side is depressed. This changes my collar bones, the position of my shoulders and of course the ribs behind that.

Besides the two fractured vertebra in my spine they have forgotten to tell me that the vertebra above and below were also damaged. So in total six vertebra were broken.
Below each lung there was a blob of fluid, blood, the size of a grapefruit.

I was very disappointed that the hospital didn't inform me on my brokenness, I had to find out after I was home. I have been told that my bones have healed now.

After minor physical activity I had more pain, became extremely tired and could not control my breathing.
So to investigate that I was examined by a lung specialist and an internist. The lung specialist concluded that my lungs have normal capacity and that despite the new configuration (of my chest) my lungs are not impacted.
The internist also could not find any problems with my new configuration. But when an internist starts to investigate they will always find things that are slightly out of the normal. One of the things she found is an enlarged thyroid that will need some attention.
Both could not explain my pain, my exhaustion and uncontrolled breathing. There are no organs or other things that are pushed down.

The pain I had to go through was intense. Slowly things recovered. Was able to sleep on one side, few weeks later the other side. Could not sneeze or cough without sinking through the floor, can now.

I have reduced the intake of painkillers sorta. What remains, for now, is the maximum dosage of paracetamol (acetaminophen).

I did find a possible cause for the extra pain, exhaustion and uncontrolled breathing. Any minor activity will cause that. I have started a slow program with exercise beginning with.. ten minutes walking a day with my cane I also realise that pain will cause exhaustion.

My mistake was to use a moment in time as a reference when I thought I could do almost everything while being deeply immersed into painkillers.

My posture is extremely important and I must rest, sleep, once during daytime to keep pain under control. Oddly enough that daytime sleep does not affect my night sleeping. Must slowly build new (and better!) muscles. One problem is, there is no direct feedback of doing things wrong and the pain that follows. It takes a day to feel the consequences and it doesn't take much to make an error.

I thought I could enter Second Life with ease. My first experiment with that went horribly wrong. I was on-line and hour, little more, and had to suffer for a week long.

Second Life is immersive. When I enter SL my muscles, in my back, tense up. Even with a timer I can not control that. It is very different as Twitter or following the Feed.

My last experiment gives one day of pain after an hour of SL.

I feel I had to write this, for completeness and to explain why I wasn't able to enter SL and keep the newspaper running.

I have neglected my responsibilities as a janitor, park ranger (?) and newspaper editor. I wasn't there for my close friends. I can't make any promises on what I can do.

Now I follow a slow program to increase my resistance and stamina. A physio therapist is testing me gently once a week and has given me a small training program. Not a workout as in a gym, but some movements of my upper body and legs I must do once a day.

So Roc, you have to continue with my janitorial responsibilities. I can not lift a broom.
Stop calling about the missing newspapers Syl! Once it's possible the newspaper will be published as usual and you'll get a refund (!) for all the missed editions.

Lead Editor Of The Bay City Post Back On-line

The Lead Editor of the Bay City Post (Vick Forcella, me) has been off-line for about four weeks. Many were worried, have send me questions, so I will explain how and why hoping it will answer your questions.

With doing so I will break two rules, using the Bay City Post for something personal and giving away private information that could potentially be abused to identify my RL identity. I do this totally in the spirit of Ever who agrees with me in doing so.

Sit down and enjoy the following story.

One Sunday afternoon, the beginning of August this year, the weather prediction was good. No winds, some sunshine and it looked like it would be the last mild day with a heat wave following. A great day for a walk into nature for me, my wife and the dog. I selected a patch of nature I had not visited before.

After walking for about an hour I woke up. Something was pushing me down with great force. I started breathing but I only managed to inhale short puffs of air and say "help" while I exhaled. I wiggled my left toe, right toe, left hand, right hand. Nothing broken so far. I could not get up.

After some time I heard a male voice saying my name. You are under tree. Don't worry, we will get you out soon.

I hear a helicopter landing, I hear a chainsaw. I see my left shoe to the right of my face, I realise my foot is inside. I fear that the chainsaw could cause something to break ripping me in two.

Next I know I am in an ambulance, racing. Racing towards the University hospital. There I go in/out scans and receive a welcome dosage of morphine.

My wife had heard a strange noise. Shouted Run! She went one way, I went the other. She had lost me, the dog found me under a fallen tree. She pushed away some branches and found me face down, mouth in the sand. She tilted my head and removed the sand. I started breathing and calling for help. She removed as much as she could but could not free me.

My phone was down somewhere. She ran away and found people with a phone and willing to help. They called the emergency services. and ran to the road to wait for the ambulance, point them towards me.

My wife became very scared when she found my left foot to the right of my head and observed from a distance as the fire fighters started working. Last thing she recalls is me shouting I love you as I was lifted into the ambulance. (not the helicopter)

My time in the University hospital was a bit weird. Besides of the opiates and the scans they continued to ask me my name, where I am and what day it was. Silly hospital, don't they have a calendar?

I spend about a week there. Not sure if I ever was able to come out of the bed by myself. I think it was there that I have send a text to a very good friend in SL and asked to inform Marianne.

Next I was raced to my local hospital. There I was able to leave the bed and walk with a cart in front of me.

The verdict.
Besides "should have been dead" and "most luckiest guy in the world" my ribs are giving pain while breathing. They tell me it's not broken, I do not believe them.

Two of the bones in my back are broken. The fractures are on the inside and not where there is great risk of a spinal injury, loosing control over breathing or loosing control over my lower body. It's stable.

I have had bleeding inside my head. My brain should be famous with three pictures taken. The pictures reveal it was healing quite good.

I had a bleeding wound on my head and had stitches.

After the local hospital I went to a revalidation home. Much freedom, pure luxury.

My wife wanted me home, and so did I. She had to twist the arm of someone to get a hospital bed at home for me so she could care for me.

I'm at home now.

I can not twist my back, bend down, pick up anything from the floor. It's painful and quite risky.
I can not breath deep as my ribs will hurt me.
I can not sleep on my side, only on my back and that hurts too. I sleep in slices of one hour, wake up with pain, walk around, eat something, then go back to bed. I have been lucky a few times with a slice of two hours.
I should not go tired. My brain will do very weird things when I go tired. It hasn't happened for a week now so I am hopeful but I better be careful. It is one of the reasons why I can not go on-line and pretend nothing has happened.
I am very emotional and I'm crying about just anything.

Though I am trying to reduce my usage I am using various painkillers.

I try to walk, behind a cart, for half an hour every day. The cart is needed for when and if I loose balance and I can sit when I'm tired.

The doctor removed my stitches yesterday and nothing fell out.

Strange things.
Even though my left leg pretended for a week not to be mine it is fully back to normal. No pain at all.
There is a video on-line (that I am not sharing) that shows the tree that fell on me. A 50 year old oak tree. It shows THE OTHER HALF OF THAT TREE still standing. I must presume that the tree once has been struck by lightning, split in half, top/down, and was waiting for me to pass by, and then fall down.

No idea what is next. According to several wiki entries I should be in hospital being monitored. According to the same wiki pages it takes one and a half year at minimum to heal. I told myself I have to be extra careful another month, then have a talk with a doc.

The Bay City Post will be published. As long as there is a community there will be a Bay City Post. Don't pin me down on a publication date.

Don't send me plants or shrubbery, they can attack.

Epilogue

If you talk about Bellisseria the discussion often moves towards mainland and the (lack of) attention it receives from Linden Lab.
After a number of discussions about this it becomes time to say it out loud.

Linden Lab has stopped caring for the mainland.

In the olden days, not so long ago, moles were working on improving the mainland in various ways.

They dived into the deep seas to plant weeds and set free fish. They set out routes and build an infra-structure increasing the value of the attached land. Regions appeared at places where SL sailing was difficult.

What's that with mainland?

Mainland *is* Second Life!

Mainland makes from Second Life a World! A world to explore and discover. It gives dimension, width and length. It allows people to own part of the world by buying a plot of land. It is a place to meet random people.

Mainland can be explored, by boat, car or airplane. Try doing that on a sim.

Linden Lab and the moles used to improve things. fill a void, make it better. Make it worth exploring.

The emptiness of mainland is probably because Linden Lab has forgotten about it. They want the BIG spenders that want an expensive sim and if you can't afford a sim you have to go to Bellisseria, the poor peoples refuge.

It appears as if Linden Lab wants people to move out of mainland and move them to Bellisseria, since that is what is happening. Mainland becomes more and more a wasteland. Empty. Home for grievers.

I bet there are hundreds of completely empty mainland regions. Completely empty. Not a single prim.
Empty is empty is dead.

Long time ago at a beach I knew well, there suddenly were beach chairs, a surfboard, and a cooler with drinks. Oh, and a rezzone. Just like that. Nobody asked for it but it was suddenly there. Making that beach alive.

Editor Vick Forcella
Mainland is loved by so many, except by Linden Lab and I am so sad about that.

It is even so that some fear to talk about this. They feel forced to cheer and applaud the moles and Linden Lab.Fear to express critique about mainland.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Bellisseria, I love it. But mainland is ignored and forgotten by the moles and Linden Lab. Those that claim that Bellisseria is mainland, try and buy land at Bellisseria and build a house there.
Now that I have this heavy load of my chest, thank you for reading the Bay City Post.
Send your love towards your reporters that made it possible, Thomas, Dakota, Qie and Marianne. Some love for me would be nice too. Thank you.

Bay City Post, Edition 88

Welcome to the eightyeighth edition of the Bay City Post!
Keeping you updated on the best city on the grid!

During the war, that I have not experienced, the constant fear was The knock on the door, they are coming for you. It is a fear that is experienced every day by many people today. If, like me, you don't have that fear, know you are fortunate.

I have seen the CEO of the company I have worked for several times. After I changed jobs I have seen a janitor that was a mirror image of that CEO. At first I thought it was the same person. Even after talking to the man, that was cleaning the floor, I wasn't sure. Turned out they are not the same, not even related. Point being, appearance tells absolutely nothing about the person. We do not live in a TV show where the crook looks like a crook and the good guy looks like a good guy.

Your reporters were hard at work last month to gather all the information you need and want.
Last month there was one special edition.
BAY CITY ANNOUNCES ANNUAL ANNIVERSARY FÊTE
(sorry for the caps)

For this month we have for you

Police and Fire Blotter
Our Police and Fire department were busy to protect and to serve. Remarkable things have happened and were recorded.

The Battle For SSPE1171
When one claims an island, another can two.

Bay City Cruis'n
Dakota searches a ship on land in Tanelorn.

Proclamation Emperor Michael I, Re: Bellisseria Content
We have all seen Emperor Michael the First. Sometimes, when he isn't drunk, he can write interesting proclamations.

Bay City's 12th Anniversary, a great success!
The anniversary was fun and you were missed! So, for you, we compiled as many images we could find and pored them into a somewhat coherent story.

Sit a spell. Or don't
We do it every day, but only because we learned how to, sit.

Where Could Dakota Be?
We ask this question every month and only Dakota knows.

Epilogue

The last edition is available from our archive.

Beware of the Sylvia's

On May the fifth, at Imaginario, there has been a sudden invasion of Sylvia's.
Please be aware, you are not seeing double. Run while you can!
Sylvia's

SL17BD

Preparations have started. Bay City will participate. We all hope that Argon will approve of what will be presented this time. The theme for this year is Road Trips and Vacation. The Second Life Birthday events will open June 19th, and will run to July the 10th. Monitor the Bay City Alliance group for notifications.

EbbeBD

On May the 7th Ebbe Altberg celebrated his birthday. If you missed that, no cake for you, wait for next year. Happy birthday Ebbe!
(Interesting fact about Ebbe, his name is pronounced in English as Ebbi)

NeoToy, Return to Bay City

Neo was live steaming for nearly two hours. A re-visit of Bay City, or was it? See the video here. It's worth to see it completely.

Last name chance causes confusion

It has happened to me twice. Someone logged in, apparently a friend, why else did I get a notification? But who could it be? The name sounded alien to me.
I opened the profile. Some things looked familiar. In my inventory I searched the expected name and found the calling card. I opened it and was presented with the new name and a profile of that person.
A good reason to start and IM. "Stranger, I do not know you, who are you??"

A sailing blog

Sailing in SL is quite amazing. I have no idea how it feels in real life but in SL you can almost feel the splatter of water hitting your face. It is a great way to be away for a while.
If you like sailing and like to be updated, or if you have never sailed in SL, then check out Liv Leigh her blog. Some good hints and tips there!

1920 Berlin project, 11th anniversary!

The project, started and maintained by Yo Yardley, has passed it's 11th anniversary. The project is a recreation of the atmosphere of 1920 Berlin with some of it's unique buildings. Epilogue

News is a commodity, it has value. If you want to earn money with news you have to give your customers something that is interesting, something they are willing to pay for. Willing to see past the advertising to get to the news.

News costs money to make. A good reporter can be working on one article for half a year, travel to far away destinations, gather evidence, listen to opinions and observe events.

Cheep news is easy to make. Copy/paste from others. Write opinion pieces without investigation. Write things that are controversial, or just wrong. Repeat old news.

Discussions about news is also news and has value. Is also very cheep to make.

In the Internet world of today people are unwilling to pay for news. They have sources outside regular media, Twitter, fb. Behind the scenes are news websites, stacked with ads, that push out interesting news and controversial opinions.

Investigative news has become rare, extremely rare. Most news today has to be churned out in a few minutes.

There are people that seek to be in the news. The motivation for that most often isn't altruistic. They want something. Funds or use the news as an ad to show how nice or good they are.

There are no bad ads, as long as it's being viewed. The product with the most annoying ad will be sold the most.

If things are repeated enough, even when they are extremely bad, can become normal and accepted.

If you share news in any way, you are part of the news chain. Even if you share critical views you can inadvertently normalise something you do not want to normalise.

If everybody starts to talk about a carpenter that wants to work as a brain surgeon people might think that carpenters seriously can do brain surgery.

<insert some wise words of conclusion here>
The Bay City Post is made by a group extremely motivated volunteers. We are biased. We like Second Life, we like Bay City, we like the Bay City Community. We want everybody to use Second Life, visit Bay City and get a taste of community.
Not because we want money, we want to share the fun we have, with everyone. And it's free!

Thank you ! Thomas, Dakota, Marianne and Qie for making this edition possible.

Bay City Post, Edition 87

Welcome to the eightyseventh edition of the Bay City Post!
Keeping you updated on the best city on the grid!

The world has stopped spinning yet it continues to rotate.
In that spirit your reporters went out to make you this edition.
This month there were two special, sad editions.

Note: Bay City representatives are working with the community and city workers to do something special to celebrate Uccie her life.
In this edition we have for you:

The one and only police officer in Bay City is keeping the pulse of our Fine City 24/7. Nothing escapes his attention, be it good, be it bad, be it catastrophical.

The Bay City Police Has Moved
They will now serve our Fine City from Moloch. Send your criminals. Keep your pyromaniacs.

Last Names Are Back
After a little wait (...) the City Workers have reintroduced Last Names.
It's different as the old last names, where all new residents could choose a last name from an ever changing list and invent a first name.
Then it became Username+Resident and Display-Name but people wanted to have Real last names again.
Now you still start off as Username-Resident but once you upgrade to Premium and you pay the fee of 40us$ you can choose a new last name from an ever changing list and invent a new first name.
You still can set a Display-Name free of charge.
Why do you want a Last Name? Because it looks way much better as Username-Resident.
And.... it is great for couples that want to go on sharing the same (yet new) Last Name.
You can change your last name as many times as you want, 40us$ each time, and go back to a previous name, for 40us$, as it is reserved only for you.

Your reporter and explorer Dakota Schwade needed a dip

Strawberry Linden No Longer A Noob!
Resident Strawberry Singh tried a different method to get another last name a year ago. She became a City Worker.
Now she has two last names! Linden and Singh. (though technically one of the two is an alt)
On April the 15th she celebrated one year of being a Linden and can no longer be called a noob.
Happy Rezday Berry!!

Celebrations is something we in our Fine City are good at. Come and join us!

New Heliport Build At Moloch.
After moving the Bay City Police Station to Moloch our police officer realized that the best way to fight crime in our Fine City a helicopter is a good way to move around. For that he ordered a brand new Heliport to be build near the station. Also it is a nice way to get some additional income as it is equipped as a GTFO station.
Dade his new truck
EEP Goes Live!
What if you could put the weather in a box? Sell it? Script it?
Now you can!

Talking about EEP, our reporter and expert Geek has found a way to script EEP.

You are wondering where Dakota was hiding the last time? Find out and discover!

Epilogue

Previous edition is available here
Last month Dakota Schwade visited Ukiyo. You can find a subway there.
The owner of that place, Joji BlueBird, has requested to give landmarks of interesting places where the subway can go to so that it can become a hub for visitors.
Give the subway a trial and give Joji your landmarks and description.
One of the places I discovered from riding the subway in Ukiyo is the BayCity Space Program. I never knew we had that. Read all about it on the community forum. JonathonSpires is the science person behind the space program. One day soon Bay City will fly to the moon and claim ownership.
Last month we reported that Torley no longer works for Linden Lab. Our investigations have revealed that our inspirational inspirer is now (again) working for Sansar that has been taken over by Wookey Projects Inc. We wish him all the very best and hope, no, expect that he remains a supporter of our Fine City. We will remain confident that Sansar will fulfill it's promise.
Due to the reported mesh leakage, that is wreaking havoc around the world, the Eurovision song contest will not go through this year. Despite that, Iceland would have had our votes! Thank you Torley for your prediction.
The Bellisseria Community (now in hibernation) has reported a new website and initiative to cater for the Bellisserian community. It's name Bellisseria Life. Give it a visit.
It has come to the attention of Emperor Michael that a lot of community efforts of Bellisseria appear to fail after a short while. He expresses his support to all community initiatives to unite Bellisserians so they can party just as wild as the residents of our Fine City. He also requests sewers and public shelters for him to (hide) reside at.
Perhaps Bellisseria is just too big to unite everyone, perhaps people should unite by region or build type. The campers, the boaters, the Edwardians, the loggers etc.

Bay City Post, Edition 85

Welcome to the eightyfifth edition of the Bay City Post!
Keeping you updated on the best city on the grid!

The Bay City Post Reporters begged for some free time, so they can prepare for Eversnight on April the First but your lead editor has used all his abilities to push for high quality work and send in their best for this edition. All this for you dear readers.

They can barricade their houses and install new sprinkler systems after this publication.
In this edition we have for you

Our know-it-all Qie Niangao found a new way to copy/paste, with talking prims.

This time Dakota found a special spot. Find it!

Our historian Marianne McCann describes in this last edition the design and building of our Fine City.
Thank you Marianne for writing these articles on how our City came to be!

Our police never has time to relax so our officer of police, Thomas Hooker, describes. They went around town to serve and protect. Let's just not talk about Lirpa.

Though each Thursday a Rumble is organized, this one was different. There were bugs involved, and rust.

Our explorer extraordinaire, Dakota Schwade, found herself in a world with strange signs and games, and was distracted.

Epilogue
Your editor looks back at one year minus a month.

Edition 84 is still available in our archive.
We have to point out April the First, Eversnight. Please prepare for this event! Some silly residents see this as a good moment to set fire to their buildings, run around with scissors and swim with hungry sharks.
Do not join these silly people!
Barricade your doors! Get a set of fire extinguishers! Lock yourselves in-doors and don't call the police or the fire department as they won't lift a finger to help you, unless you need some petrol.
Just so you know.
Our local resident Marianne McCann her rezday has surpassed her age, again, last February 22nd.
How it all began
As you can read in the Police and Fire Blotter this has caused some severe traffic problems. The party that was thrown at her had a deep impact.
Image: Kennylex Luckless
The large amount of root beer has affected Marianne her ability to chair the Bay City Alliance, she had to skip a meeting to recover.
Image Pygar Bu
Image Thomas Hooker
At this very moment there is something going on, some event, for the American Cancer Society.
I tried to search and search but I can not find a thread of info about it. One thing I do know, a new style of Linden Homes is being presented there as well. Hop on over. When I have time I'll do the same.
Edit to add. More info about the event is available on Inara her blog.
News just came in that Torley Linden is no longer working for Linden Lab. We have been missing him for quite some time, he was working for Sansar and created music for some breathtaking experiences.
Our friend and inspirational inspirator, that is inspiring, will remain active with music. He predicts Iceland will win the Eurovision Song Contest for this year.
Thank you Torley for making our world an amazing place, helping us each step of the way! Keep your account and stick around Torley!
Don't mind me, I have cleaning to do.

Prepare!
