Epilogue

Somehow it feels like coming full circle.

When I volunteered to awaken the Bay City Post from it's deep sleep my motivation was to bring back something that was one of the most visible artefacts of Bay City. The City wasn't complete without it.

I volunteered long before I received the keys to the building. Must have been December, November, of 2018 when I gave my resumé. Due to reasons unknown, and they are none of my business, it took some time.

I assumed I had to do it all myself. I started with cutting and pasting posts as announced in this post.

My idea was to make publications based on label, for that I had to move old posts and add labels.It was a lot of work but my idea turned out to work. 

I think, but am not sure, that this method is less work to maintain.

While lubricating the presses I was contacted by the old reporters, one at a time, they wanted to help out!

Suddenly I had Thomas, Qie, Dakota and Marianne helping me. Great!

Confident we started writing what resulted in the first real publication of our team.

That was one year and one month ago.

Though I have stared at empty pages many times before I started as editor, it still is a challenge to create something from nothing, for others to enjoy.

It's not coming full circle, as that would mean I would stop. I won't and you are stuck with me for some time to come.

Bay City Post, Edition 75

The last edition was a hectic one.

We scrambled to make it, then discovered that the demand was much higher as anticipated. Out of paper we went to the paper-mill in Kahruvel to load another pallet (some trees might be missing), out of ink we went to Jizo to squash, in an animal friendly way, squids to retrieve their ink. The presses kept on turning until everybody received a copy of the Bay City Post.

We were even able to deliver the Bay City Post to Sylvia.

This edition was no less of a challenge. Half way most of the staff went missing in Bellisseria. They returned with a sunburn, could not stop talking about their new vacation housing and were half drunk thanks to tequila sunrise.

Next we lost most of the staff as a sacrifice to Mount G'all in the hope to fix things.

Lucky everybody was reincarnated (lava burned) and we were able to write this edition.

But first this,

Budget meeting

Normally I would not bother you, dear readers from our Fine City, with something boring as a budget meeting but this time I have to as the budget has a direct impact on the price you pay for the Bay City Post.

The lazy way to make a budget is to take the old one and add 10 percent. The difficult way is to analyse spending and project future spending.

We know the rental cost of our place in the Hyperbole building, the price of the ink, the press and the logistics to deliver the Bay City Post on your doorstep. It is also important to include the bribes we have to give to the various officials in and around our Fine City. I won't mention the bribes that go towards our Mayori (tinm).

The biggest chunk of the budget goes to the reporters, their investigative time, the development of the pictures, the paper and typewriter. The endless time staring at an empty white page.

We pondered and discussed together with our leadership team and came up with a definitive budget.

We decided to do it the lazy way. We took the old budget and increased it with 12 percent.

The motivation for the additional 2% is the intention to give our reporters a massive and well deserved pay rise!

The old budget was 0L$. According to my calculator the new budget (0+0*12/100) will be 0L$. As a result the future price of the Bay City Post will be 0L$.

A blimp has crash-landed onto the Toxic Taco. The BCPD and BCFD are investigating.

Epilogue

In May 2008 a crowd gathered at the border of Nova Albion. Something spectacular was going to happen. From afar people tried to look over the bridge to see what was happening but the fog took away the sight.

Then the bridge closed and the crowd started running in. Bay City was opened!

Long before some clever minds were plotting something never done before. Michael and Blue wanted to make something unique. For that they deliberated, plotted and draw up the lines of roads and waterways.

They asked the most clever creators in our world to help out. The clever creators received the name Mole. The LDPW was founded.

They started mining as many prims they could gather so to build the infrastructure of our Fine City. Their secret wasn't unnoticed, word got out and people started asking questions, that were left unanswered. All they could do is wait at the bridge and so they did.

When the crowd raced out over the newly opened bridge they found a beautiful themed city with parks, canals, roads and land that can hold twice the amount of prims.

The lands were sold faster as you can say Bellisseria. Houses and buildings went up in great pace. All within the set theme, 1950's Chicago.

This month we will celebrate the 11th anniversary of our fine City.

Bay City Post, edition 74

As I was cleaning the offices of the Hyperbole building I arrived at the vacant premises of the Bay City Post. After I scrubbed and cleaned the place I tried out some of the chairs, they sit very comfortably. I looked around and found empty coffee cups with black stains, dustbins still filled with scrapped paper, a telephone that was ringing all the time. As janitor I wasn't allowed to answer phones but I did it anyway.

It was an angry resident complaining about a not delivered newspaper. I tried to tell her, it was a she (I won't reveal your name Sylvia), that there were some logistical problems and that we probably didn't have her address correctly listed. I invented that answer all by myself.

I took her address and put it on the desk of the editor. Then I realized that there is no editor, no staff and no newspaper. Nobody would read the message I just wrote down.

Looking around I could see the potential and the idea of becoming the editor popped into my mind. Quickly I went home, grabbed my tool-belt and installed new locks. If ever Roc would ask I could tell him there was a burglary and that I had to replace them, not so far from the truth.

The next day I called around some mates and friends and asked if they could help out, setting up a new newspaper. TJ was game immediately, he does anything for a good beer. Qie was skeptical and wanted to write an lsl script to generate articles. Mari just wanted to play with her new drumsticks and destroyed a typewriter. Dakota had too much beer and was later arrested by TJ while she was cruising to make articles.

Michael L. dropped by to say Hi to everybody in Bay City.

Together we started work, getting the addresses right, sending out big invoices, and writing up some real serious stuff.

We had to use a second hand printing press I found at a castle in Zindra. The normal one is too complicated and uses methods that haven't even been invented yet! (what is a laser?)

The press we used is easy to handle, just a drum you turn around by hand. You insert the print from the typewriter, wrap it around the drum, poor in ink, add a stack of paper and swing baby swing!

In practice, for you dear readers, this means no columns but a continues roll of paper, top down till the end. Lucky I found some rulers you can see on the web. With the rulers you can select articles made by a reporter or a different ruler to select articles about a specific subject. I also provide some links in this article.

Covered in ink we came up with this edition. I hope you like it. Please ignore the smudges.

Thank you Kinn!

Using this space here I'd like to thank Kinnaird Fiachra.

Kinn took over the Bay City Post from interim editor Marianne McCann in March 2016. Before that she was was an active Police and Fire Blotter reporter.

It must have been quite a challenge for her to take over a newspaper that is littered with fires and calamities.

She took off like a rocket, publishing articles month after month, inspiring co-writers to do the same. Cleaning the newspaper with incorrect links she changed the newspaper to be current, up to date and filled with plenty of things to do and see.

The residents had no idea the effort it takes to do all those jobs, and live a real life as well. We, the residents, relied on the newspaper to arrive on our doorstep each month to provide us with the latest gossip.

She guided us to the vibrant Bay City Community and made us all participants.

I want to thank you Kinn for all the work you have done for the Bay City Post, laying the solid foundation of this newspaper. Bay City would look very different without you.

When you read this Kinn, I hope we make you proud.

Service announcement notice

This notice is to give notice that parts of this blog are going to be reworked.

At a time when new cities appear on the map it is important that we defend our fine city with the strongest defences possible.
For that this newspaper will adapt to the changes to become more flexible, more empowering.

I have laid down my broomstick and have got me a stack of newspaper paper that I found in the cellar. A giant jar of ink is ready to merge with the paper to become again what this newspaper has to be and always was.

The number one source of information about Bay City and it's surrounding areas. (explosions and fires included)

The current layout works good, but in time it stacks up to a hard to maintain heap of information that becomes harder and harder to update.
I will repost the side-pages as blog posts and add labels to them. When there is time I will also add labels to older posts. With that the newspaper can be read from the blog posts, category labels and author labels.

That reposting will look weird, sorry for that.

There is a good risk that comments will fall away during this process. Sorry.

New articles will be published as posts with added labels, each post one author, one category. Posts will be deferred until the editor (me, the man with the broomstick) posts them all together for one period with an editorial that binds them together as one publication.

The intention is, lower maintenance, flexibility, less dependant.

So, give me some time. When I'm done we will publish new real articles soon.

Bay City Post - August 2017

WELCOME to the seventy-first issue of the Bay City Post - Keeping you updated on the best city on the Grid!

As one of my reporters reminded me, August is generally a time when "all good Europeans and psychoanalysts take off", and I was starting to think we would be doing the same. First Life has thrown me some serious curves over the past six months - some good, some bad, all life-changing...and Second Life has been put on a back burner because of it. I had decided to give up my editorship of the Post, but sitting in my office this morning, I remembered so many of the reasons that Second Life, and Bay City in particular, mean so much to me..and I reconsidered that decision.

Second Life is a magical place for me, and not just because I can color my hair blue on a whim. ;) From my first day here, when a friend took me to The Far Away and I was reminded of the Territories from Stephen King's "The Talisman", this has been a place which has filled me with wonder, and has often taken my breath away. I've made some very good friends in this world. I also met Ziki here, someone who fills both of my lives with love, laughter and adventure. Logging in may be more difficult when First Life gets this crazy, but SL is not something I'd ever want to lose.

And Bay City has been a part of my Second Life from the beginning. The building where the Post is located is in Dennis, the hub of so much Ever-induced mayhem in the past. I have a lot of good memories here, and one of the main reasons I took on the editor job was to honor Ever Dreamscape's memory. But I've come to realize that if I'm to do this job, I need to make it my own. When I took over the Brewery after Ever died, I planned to leave it as it was. But the joke was on me, because I turned on autoreturn and within seconds, the only thing left on the plot was a Dreamscape Insurance Policy, hanging in thin air. I could almost hear Ever laughing at me. She wouldn't have wanted a shrine; she'd have wanted us to make our own fun, and to create our own mayhem...in our own unique ways.

So, I'm staying, but expect some changes as I figure out how the Post needs to evolve. Have ideas? Let me know! And as I stated last month, the Post is looking for several talented reporters willing to write occasional articles for the front page, and also has a potential opportunity for a columnist (complete with your very own extra special desk in the newsroom!) Do you have an interest in what's happening in Bay City? Are YOU perhaps what's happening in Bay City? Well now's your chance to let your talents and your love for Bay City shine. We will ply you with endless coffee, our undying gratitude, and special access to the large gorilla perched atop the Post building. June saw the celebration of Second Life's fourteenth birthday, and as always, Bay City took part in the celebrations.  The slim, creative parcel build (pictured above) was designed by Marianne McCann, and featured an era-specific themed interior to highlight the best of our fair City. Years ago, an impromptu party at Bay City's birthday parcel was what introduced me to the City and it's fun-loving inhabitants. I hope that many more people found their way to Bay City through this year's display.
