The summer is warm, too warm. So we have events at night!

There will be food, games, a car-wash, racing and many more things one can do at night. There is even gossip about the election of a new Miss Bay City! Will there be sharks?

Our DJ *and* current Miss Bay City, Gospeed Racer, will play the bestest of tunes for you, accompanied by the famous one and only Friar Don!

Mole appreciation day

On August the 31st the Bellisseria community organised their first Mole Appreciation Day (aka First Annual Mole Day Party) to thank them for the work they have done so far for Bellisseria and it's growing community.

More then 70 people showed up including at least 7 moles, breaking the sim.

This means that the moles now have two events every year to go to, and get worms. Bay City celebrates Mole Day each year in the beginning of February.

The more mole days the better! Our critters deserve plenty of worms!

Editorial-

From the standpoint of Bay City it might appear that Bellisseria is stealing the best of Bay City. For parts that is true, but is it bad?

Bay City has grown a community from the day it was created. We share experiences that are hard to compare with other communities. The Bay City Alliance is the leading force behind our initiatives, including this newspaper.

Bellisseria is new and fresh. The community is fragmented into 20 groups with 20 different websites. It will take some time before things settle down and Bellisseria has a sustainable community. 

It is good that Bellisseria grows it's own community. I feel it can "borrow" as much from Bay City as they want to grow that community. Next to that, Bay City can not block initiatives from the community of Bellisseria.

One of the cornerstones of the Bay City community is it's relentless effort to support "good causes" most notably Child's Play. None of the actions of the Bay City Community has a commercial intent. I expect the same from Bellisseria.

There is much that differs between Bay City and Bellisseria. There much that unites us. When Bay City can help, Bay City will help.

Topaz Oasis

The furry community at Topaz Oasis has sealed a cultural exchange treaty with Bay City. Part of this treaty is the placement of the Bay City Post newspaper vendor as a gesture of good will. Bay City kindly supports this initiative and provides the newspaper completely for free!

Topaz Oasis is home to the United Furry Outpost (UFO) and AGRA racing.

Hot Bay City Nights

The sad news is Hot Bay City Nights didn't make it this year. 

In previous years it ran a whole week and required a lot of volunteers. This year, despite best efforts (begging and offering slow cooked sweet marinated noobs), not enough volunteers were available.

Also there was that thing called RL, heavy overrated but a force to be reckoned with.

The Experience Teleporter

We wrote about this a month ago. Please read it again as it is so fun to use! I am using it in trap-doors, ladders and the entrance into the castle made with a mega prim. Getting the key to work is a bit fiddly, specially on a different parcel. Try and try again and it will work.

WELCOME to the fifty-ninth issue of the Bay City Post! - Keeping you updated on the best city on the grid!  

 

August will bring with it Hot Bay City Nights, with car washes to benefit Child's Play charity, and the annual crowning of Miss Bay City! To keep updated on those exciting events, as well as Bay City's weekly rumble, monthly Espresso Night (see below), and occasional block parties, please feel free to join the Bay City Alliance group. Regular and varied community events are part of what makes Bay City unique, and if you are thinking of moving to our fair city, attending these events is a great way to get to know the people who already call Bay City home.

Two evenings ago, I attended Espresso Night at The Pen, a monthly event during which Bay City residents (or anyone from across the Grid!) are invited to gather together in a virtual coffeehouse to exchange stories, poems, ideas, joys and sorrows, or expound upon any topic imaginable - while remembering that The Pen is in a G-rated region, and that mimes, while occasionally entertaining, are expressly forbidden. It occurred to me during the evening what an unusual and wonderful thing we have in Espresso Night, and in the Bay City community in general. There are certainly private sims where communities exist, and where people gather to chat or have events. The difference is, those sims are generally started by a group of friends, so the communities which occur within them are already formed. Bay City is on the Mainland, and is comprised of 46 (!) sims. Certainly those of us who live or work there are not going to know all of our neighbors, and not all of us are going to get along all of the time. And yet, a strong-knit community does indeed exist  - of people who play together, work together on projects, and work out our occasional differences in a democratic way (such as throwing people in the canals or burning down the city on a regular basis). Seriously though, the community that exists here is something rare and unique, and I feel privileged to be a part of it.

A few months ago, I interviewed Torley Linden about his favorite places on the Mainland, and he placed The Pen, and Espresso Night in particular, at the top of his list. Here is what he had to say:

"In my early Second Life as a Linden, Robin Linden was a tremendously positive influence on me, and she gave me a book called The Great Good Place by Ray Oldenburg. It's about the importance of social surroundings like coffeeshops in creating community. (Context: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place) To this day, I think one of the best examples of SL heritage is the monthly event hosted by Marianne McCann that breathes life into this beatnik building, which I've had the joy of attending on several occasions with friends. You mentioned Espresso Yourself in a previous post, and I recommend that any new Resident of Second Life should explore the broader Bay City — including the museum! — to get a feel for an abundant culture that continues to thrive over the years."

Echoing Torley's sentiments, if you are reading this paper, you are at least somewhat interested in Bay City and what happens here. I'd urge you to get more involved - attend some events or throw an event, get to know your neighbors, and stop by the Community Center for information and freebies, or to attend a weekly Bay City Alliance meeting. What makes this city fabulous is the people who live and work here, and all of the combined interests and efforts of those people. What will YOUR contribution be?

Scary Stuff!

It's October, and here's the post!

Bay City is one of the few places to have spooky sights year round. Check out the Asylum in South Channel, or the Falmouth Hotel in Falmouth, for wall-to-wall spooks on Hallowe'en or any day!

Also, check out the hay maze for some more general rated spooks: the hay maze may not have a lot of blood and gore like some other places, but it's still got plenty of spooks and things that go bump in the night for those who enjoy their scares without it being a Grand Guignol presentation.

Anyway, enough chatter... it's the POST!

BAY CITY BECOMES "HAY CITY"

Annual autumnal hay maze offers fun, spooks.

Bay City is hosting its fifth annual Hallowe'en Hay Maze in the Bay City Fairgrounds in the North Channel Region. The space will welcome people from all over the grid to explore a traditional autumn hay maze filled with critters and spooky effects.

The Hay Maze was built by Marianne McCann, with landscaping by Pygar Bu and assistance from Kriss Lehmann of Botanical and the Linden Department of Public works, Enjoy a fun, spooky trek through the maze, and avoid the ghosts, rats, and giant spiders along the way!

After completing the maze, Bay City also welcome you to check out a couple of our permanent locations with a scary flair: the Channel Island Asylum and the Falmouth Hotel. You'll find signs pointing the way after you exit the maze.

HOT BAY CITY NIGHTS A SUCCESS!

Event includes the crowning of new Miss Bay City, Belle Mistwallow

Bay City's Annual Hot Bay City night event concluded with L$60,000 raised for charity, a new Miss Bay City, and a great weeklong event. The latest person to be crowned was Belle Mistwallow. Runners up were Ayame Kintsugi (Zombiegal Resident), Micha (MichaMoz Resident), Cinder Roxley, and Wellington Beam

The event was initially delayed due to health issues and other concerns, but this did not stop the show from going on. Stepping up to build the venue this time out was ADudeNamed Anthony, who did a stellar job with the area. He also was one of the car vendors, and provided a brand-new mesh 1961 2Zoetic Panther to our new Miss Bay City.

A big thank you to all who played a part in the event, including Priscilla Cox and Rachel Seelowe for organizing car washes, Pygar Bu for Emceeing the Miss Bay City event, and ADudeNamed Anthony, Kinnaird (Resident), Marianne McCann, and Evola Courtois for judging contestants.

Page 2 Editorial: "Resurgance"

I've been around Bay City since the first auctions. As a result, I've seen the city through a lot of ups and downs. The days when people were making horrific, bloody, physical grief-ish displays on their parcels in order to force sales of land, for example.

We've faced painful losses and other maladies that have at times shook our city to the core. We have also experienced great highs here. Some of my happiest SL moments were a direct result of Bay City.

Indeed, the city has its ebbs and flows, and I am pleased to say that we're in the midst of the former. While we are not without some issues -- the amount of open land on the westside, or whatever has been going on in Bay City - Sconset, for example -- the city is thriving.

Our city, in the last few months, has gained some great new residents, who are making this city even greater. Take for example, Bay City - Truro, even stretching now into Bay City - Barnstable. What was once empty and unattractive is now home to some great, places to RP and enjoy led by Bay City Residents new and old. Or consider Bay City - Falconmoon and the new hedge maze located there by Belle Mistwallow.

As they create great things, they potentially  inspire neighbors to do the same, and encourage other great folks to join Bay City.

It's great to see the city thrive and reach new heights, and wonderful to see new friends enter the fold!

HOT BAY CITY NIGHTS

August meant Hot Bay City Nights, our third annual car show & sale, charity car wash, and site of the Miss Bay City Pageant!

The weather was fine at the fairgrounds as six of the top car designers in Second Life came together to show off their wares. Included in the show this year was 2Zoetic Motors, GEMC, What-Iff Motors, Akioto Motors, GEMC, Cindy Henusaki Custom Cars, and Bull God Choppers. 

The event was more than just buying and selling cars, with the annual charity car washes put together by Rachel Seelowe and Kinnaird. These three events, coupled with regular fundraising during the event and some generous donations by our car vendors led to some record breaking donations, as Bay City raised L$115,900 for Child's Play Charity. That's just about US$437.00. The donation is currently making its way to PayPal, after which it will be presented to Child's Play.

Finally, Bay City was home to the best beauty pageant contestants on the grid, with the Miss Bay City Pageant! Participating this year were Linsey Carter, Maureen Boccaccio, Uccello Poultry, Alyssa Elizabeth Kintsugi, and Lorna Stratten. DJing the event was GoSpeed Racer of KONA Stream, with Pygar Bu as Master of Ceremonies. ADudeNamed Anthony, Evola Courtois, and Marianne McCann served as judges.

After a heated contest -- and a slight interruption by a fellow in a sombrero -- it was Uccello for a three-peat of winners residing on the Bay City - Dennis/Bay City Harwich border! Congrats to all our contestants!

Labor Intensive

Labor Party, Labor Day… It’s been a long hot summer and it’s taken a lot of work to keep our pixels cool. In spite of our Hot Bay City Nights I think we’ve achieved just that. Bay City is growing and we’ve shared some hot times in this cool little coastal. Summer breezes by too fast, but it’s been one fine day here by the bay! I’d like to say thanks to all our friends old and new. Know that you are appreciated and we look forward to more great seasons full of fun and frolicks with you all!

Hot Bay City Nights a BIG Sucess!

Bay City Hosts Second Annual Car Show!

It was August and it was hot Hot HOT! What's better than hot rods, bikinis, music, dancing, drinks and dawgs?!? Nothing! That's what!!! Bay City hosted the grid’s most Rockin' vintage auto show... Hot Bay City Nights was held the last week of August at the Bay City Fairgrounds. There were six awesome vintage automakers with cars on display, music and dancing, a bikini contest, three charity car washes, and a Bay City Alliance welcome booth.

The charity car wash was held three times with hosts Benjamin Wahl, Nadia Soldya and Ever Dreamscape. Donations were raised for childsplaycharity.org, and a whopping L$83,550 was raised!!! Wow! "Your donations support seriously-ill children in hospitals by distracting them from their illnesses, and help them cope with fear, anxiety, and boredom." -Cameron Hosner - Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

We would like to thank all those who came out to the event and helped out with the car washes!

Sylvia Tamalyn Named Miss Bay City!

The “Miss Bay City” bikini contest Saturday, August was well attended and a panel of independent judges proclaimed Miss Tamalyn as the 2013 winner. Angela Seale- Poultry graciously passed her crown over as guests cheered on both the beauty queens. Rumors that Miss Tamalyn won due to an overabundance of insurance premiums are false.  Trust me I know this to be true as she hasn’t even purchased Beauty Queen Prize Car coverage yet!!!

Miss Tamalyn received a Miss Bay City sash and crown and a new car donated by ADudeNamed Anthony. Judges were ADudeNamed Anthony, Evola Courtois, and former queen Angela Seale - Poultry.

I “ran” into (k maybe over) Ivan Suen who has been a busy big builder in Bay City!

Ivan Suen: I'm having second thoughts about dumping a few hundred K lindens into the new Bay City Heliport.

Ever Dreamscape: hmmm heliport?

Ivan Suen: Yup,  took me a while to negotiate the landowner to sell.  but I needed a spot where it could be flown into with no fear of ban orbs nearby

Ever Dreamscape: gah ill bet

Ivan Suen: The problem with the airport is that airlines can't set up shop there :)

Ivan Suen: so the "Bay City Heliport" is essentially a partner to the larger airport, which will host up to 8 airlines or helicopter tour people. I scripted up a tour giver that narrates for you :))

Ivan Suen: I'd like to do this interview in two parts.  The first in my normal typing voice,  and then the second by banging by empty beer into the keyboard.   shidfhsdfasdhjusd

Ever Dreamscape: lol ya... so tell me what's going on here?

Ivan Suen: It's another commercial experiment... seeing if there's need for a heliport.  One of the challenges with Bay City is that the current airport doesn't support operations by some of the airlines such as around the Blake Sea regions.  Another challenge unique to Bay City is that our parcel sizes and road layout really prohibit a private runway (except for small private aircraft).  So similarly to how some cities have had success using helicopters, this is an effort to mirror some of those.

Ivan Suen: Ultimately, I'd like to see existing SL airlines have ticket counters here and fly to and from Bay City destinations as well as other locations in Sansara and Heterocera Atoll continents. This facility will also be suited for tour operators, where they can have their guests meet here and board a helicopter for tours of the City.

Ivan Suen: The inside is mostly mocked up, so don't put too much faith in it yet.  But I think the overall flow will be as it is now. Meeting space / ticket counters on first floor.  Two banks of elevators to take passengers up to the helicopter deck which can service up to three passenger helicopters at a time (such as the AS-363 or EC-135 by S&W.

Ever Dreamscape: looks great!

Ivan Suen: Thx.  It is loosely inspired by some reading on art deco architecture as well as a few design cues from the Heliport found in the World’s Fair in NYC back back in the 60s (I think the 60s).

Ever Dreamscape: so you built and scripted this all yourself?

Ivan Suen: I do a lot of building and scripting.  Although for a lot of my projects lately I leverage the prim-slinging talent of a few friends as well as technologies from Gentek and Hippo.

Ever Dreamscape: so what would you suggest people to do if they want to get involved in this project?

Ivan Suen: For project updates, be sure to click on the mailing list button out front.  To help beyond that, we're going to need some pilots that are good at flying helicopters and hopefully would want to offer passenger service or tours!

Ivan Suen: So if you ever wanted to start a tour company, get your logos, ideas, and friends together!

Ever Dreamscape: Tours would be fantastic and the location here next to the Truro Airship Rez zone is fantastic!

Ivan Suen: It's also close to the aquarium and many other FANTASTIC Bay City builds, especially some of the random great spots you can find just checking out your neighbors creations!

Ever Dreamscape: Wow thanks for the tour Ivan I hope this is a big success for you. Anything else that our readers may want to know?

Ivan Suen: And please be sure to not just get out and enjoy Bay City's Roads, Water, and Sky, but please use sensible ban lines or security devices to help everybody else enjoy the same freedom of movement :)

"Well done, son! Now we swim around them a few times with all of our fins showing." And they did.
